IMI Level 2 Award in MOT Testing (Class 5)
The MOT Class 5 Training and Assessment course qualifies experienced MOT testers to carry out inspections on larger passenger vehicles such as minibuses and ambulances (13–16 seats).
This training builds on existing Class 4 MOT testing knowledge and equips technicians to handle the size, layout, and compliance requirements of Class 5 vehicles safely and accurately.

Eligibility Requirements
To enrol on this DVSA-approved qualification, you must meet the following criteria:
• Age
You must be at least 18 years old
• Experience
You must have experience working with Class 5 vehicle types, such as minibuses, ambulances, or large passenger vehicles
• Technical Qualification
You must already be a qualified MOT Tester for Class 4 vehicles
• Good Character
You must have no unspent criminal convictions related to dishonesty, fraud, or serious motoring offences
• Driving
You must not be suspended or disqualified from MOT testing and must hold a full UK driving licence
You will be required to complete a practical assessment demonstrating your competence in testing Class 5 vehicles. Upon successful completion, your DVSA MOT Tester profile will be updated to include Class 5 authorisation.
Course Content Overview
The MOT Class 5 Training and Assessment course is designed for qualified Class 4 MOT Testers who wish to expand their authorisation to include Class 5 vehicles—primarily larger passenger-carrying vehicles such as minibuses, ambulances, and community transport vehicles with 13–16 passenger seats.
This course ensures you are equipped with the specific knowledge and understanding required to safely inspect and test larger vehicle types, in line with DVSA regulations.
Class 5 Vehicle Familiarisation
• Differences between Class 4 and Class 5 vehicles
• Common configurations, safety features, and inspection challenges
• Accessibility considerations and weight/load compliance
DVSA MOT Testing Requirements for Class 5
• Testing procedures and pass/fail criteria specific to Class
• Understanding and applying DVSA inspection manuals correctly
• Use of the MOT Testing Service (MTS) for Class 5 entries
• Safety Protocols & Inspection Techniques
• Checking structural integrity, seating, and emergency exits
• Brake testing and load simulation requirements
• Test Log & Record-Keeping
• Correct completion of test logs, refusal notices, and pass certificates
• Evidence management and audit preparation
Assessment
Conducting a full Class 5 MOT under observation.
Feedback and performance review by the assessor.
